John Moody and his Icarus, and Easy Riser flying machines.
I had an opportunity to spend some time with
"The Father Of Ultralight Aviation" John Moody at Sun N Fun. During the
mid 70's John and a lot of other pilots were looking for a way to get
their hang gliders airborne without having to jump off a mountain or being
towed.
Larry Mauro had introduced his Icarus II hang glider to the
market. John purchased one and set about powering it with a 8 HP Chrysler
West Bend engine. In March of 1975 he achieved powered flight in the Icarus over a frozen lake bed in Wisconsin.
In 1976 he was flying his Icarus at the EAA Oshkosh convention,
doing some wing overs when he went out of control at about 300 feet and
ended up doing some "tumbles" before gaining control and landing his
craft, intact. The EAA was not impressed and ground him, but lifted the
ban after he explained what had happened, and promising not to do it again.
Moody opened Ultralight Flying Machines of Wisconsin, and his customers
included Bill Lishman, subject of the movie Fly Away Home.
John Moody is
a charter inductee in the EAA’s Ultralight Hall of Fame.
