The new engine from Needleye Engines was flying on an Earth Star
Odyssey at Sun N Fun 2002.
According to the manufacturer the twin
cylinder opposed, 100 cubic inch, air cooled engine "is a very
smooth running engine with good torque characteristics" "the
engine is very economical to run and turns at very slow rpm, which
should give about 1500 hours between major overhauls."
The engine is all aluminum, uses push rods, with hydraulic
lifters, has a forged steel counter weighted crankshaft,
forged aluminum pistons, forged steel con rods, using
a wet sump oil system, has two gear driven magnetos with
dual spark plugs for ignition, uses a flat side 42 mm Mikuni carb,
with a mechanical fuel pump, and has electric start.
Currently the engine has 40 hours bench and dyno time and 3.5
hours of flying time on the Odyssey. According the factory 10
engines are currently built and ready for shipment at the factory.
